Aim 4 Heath Massage techniques:
Trigger Point Therapy
A very effective technique involving the diagnosis of trigger points in the muscles which cause not only local pain, but also pain referral in the body. These points are common causes of headaches, disc like symptoms, numbness and tingling in the arms and legs. Treatment occurs via the applying manual pressure at the trigger point and waiting for the adhesion to release and stop pain referral. It is an extremely useful technique in managing a large number of muscular problems.
Active Release Techniques
ART is a special technique used to work directly at the adhesion sight. It involves the application of pressure on the muscle at the scar tissue sight while having the patient actively move the muscle to create contraction, relaxation and stretch. This breaks down the scar tissue, releasing the adhesions, increasing circulation, releasing the nerves, reducing the pain and improving mobility and muscle strength. This technique works well patients with significant muscle damage, tendonitis and nerve entrapments.
Myofacial Release:
This technique is primarily used to manually stretch out the fascia through manual techniques to release bonds between fascia, joints, and muscles with the goal of eliminating pain and increasing range of motion. Myofascial release usually involves applying shear compression or tension in various directions, or by skin rolling.
Deep Tissue/Remedial Massage
Deep Tissue massage is a heavier technique used by massage therapists to relieve significant tension in the muscle, connective tissue and fascia. This type of massage focuses on the muscles located below the top layered muscles. It is the more common technique used at our clinic and is recommended for individuals who experience consistent pain, are involved in heavy physical activity, athletes, and patients who have sustained a physical injury and have significant muscle tension.
Swedish Massage:
Swedish massage involves a softer technique using five styles of long, flowing strokes. The five basic strokes are effleurage (sliding or gliding), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), cross friction and vibration or shaking. Swedish can help with pain reduction, joint stiffness and in individuals with poor circulation.
